Tulum is located on the Caribbean coast slightly less than 2 hours drive south of Playa del Carmen and just ten minutes south of the Tankah area. Visit this site if you are staying in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, the Akumal area or Tankah.
Tulum is Late Classic and referred to as the only coastal Maya settlement although there were indeed other coastal structures. The Mayan civilization was well in decline.
Tulum served as both a port and a defense structure. This small city is surrounded by a wall. There is a small but nice beach and visitors often wear bathing suits in order to enjoy lying on the sand between the ancient ruins. Food, drink and shopping are all available and there is a parking fee.
Coastal views are spectacular and we recommend a visit. Not a large site, Tulum can be explored in 1-2 hours. Explore in the morning then head down the Tulum coast road for lunch at one of the many restaurants.
